The Chinese President embarks on his first foreign trip of the year, revitalizing a 75-year alliance amid shifting global dynamics and deepening Pyongyang-Moscow ties.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has landed in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang, commencing a high-stakes, two-day state visit aimed at reinforcing Beijing’s traditional role as the country’s primary benefactor. The highly anticipated Xi Jinping Pyongyang visit marks the Chinese leader’s inaugural international trip of the year and his first time returning to the isolated nation in seven years, signaling a critical push to consolidate influence over his nuclear-armed neighbor.

President Xi departed Beijing early Monday morning alongside a high-level delegation that includes his wife, Peng Liyuan, chief of staff Cai Qi, and Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The state visit comes at the official invitation of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Revitalizing an “All-Weather” Strategic Alliance

This historic summit coincides with the 65th anniversary of the landmark 1961 Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance Treaty signed between the two nations—which remains China’s only active mutual defense pact with another country.

“We must boost strategic cooperation and work together to oppose hegemonism and coercive politics,” President Xi wrote in a front-page editorial published by North Korea’s state-run Rodong Sinmun newspaper upon his arrival. “Our goal is to jointly pursue a stable, multipolar world order.”

The response from Pyongyang has been exceptionally warm, with the state media hailing President Xi as “the most honored state guest” and noting that the streets of the capital are filled with an atmosphere of profound bilateral solidarity.

Navigating the Moscow-Pyongyang Factor

International relations experts note that the timing of the summit is highly calculated. In recent years, traditional Beijing-Pyongyang trade was severely strained by pandemic-era border freezes, allowing Russia to rapidly step into the vacuum. Following a mutual defense treaty signed between Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un, North Korea has significantly increased its military and economic alignment with Moscow.

For Beijing, the primary objective of this trip is to ensure that North Korea’s growing proximity to Russia does not outpace its foundational dependence on China. By renewing close personal ties with Kim, President Xi looks to preserve China’s unique diplomatic leverage over the Korean Peninsula.

Furthermore, the talks are expected to center on substantial economic aid packages. Analysts predict Beijing may offer vital shipments of agricultural fertilizers and grain, alongside a phased resumption of Chinese group tourism to North Korea, providing Pyongyang with an economic lifeline without overtly violating outstanding United Nations Security Council sanctions.

While Western powers look to Beijing to use its sway to curb Kim Jong Un’s expanding nuclear ambitions, Chinese officials are expected to prioritize regional stability and anti-hegemonism over active denuclearization pressure during the high-level talks.
