Trump to Attend Historic NATO Summit in Ankara, Rubio Confirms

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announces the president’s in-person attendance at what he calls “the most critical meeting in NATO history.”

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has officially confirmed that President Donald Trump will travel to Türkiye to attend the upcoming NATO Heads of State and Government Summit in person. Announcing the high-profile visit during a congressional hearing, Rubio emphasized that the highly anticipated Trump NATO Summit Ankara assembly, scheduled for July 2026, is poised to become one of the most critical and transformative turning points in the history of the transatlantic alliance.

The announcement came during an extensive testimony before the House Foreign Relations Committee, where Secretary Rubio answered lawmakers’ questions regarding the State Department’s fiscal year 2027 budget request and various shifting global security challenges.

A Critical Turning Point for the Alliance

While briefing members of the House on American diplomatic strategies, Rubio placed heavy emphasis on the upcoming gathering of Western leaders in the Turkish capital.

“The President will personally attend the next NATO Heads of State Meeting,” Secretary Rubio stated firmly. “I believe that NATO’s upcoming meeting, which will take place in Türkiye this July, will likely be the most important meeting in the entire history of the alliance.”

Rubio reiterated that the United States remains a committed member of the alliance but signaled that Washington’s participation comes with expectations of an administrative and strategic overhaul. According to the Secretary of State, NATO requires “significant modifications” to remain effective in the modern geopolitical landscape.

Ankara Summit Set for July 7-8

These critical structural reforms and burden-sharing adaptations will take center stage during the high-stakes summit, which is officially scheduled to take place on July 7–8 in Ankara.

Diplomatic sources suggest that holding the summit in Türkiye highlights Ankara’s growing strategic leverage within the alliance, particularly as a bridge between Western security architectures and regional dynamics in Eurasia and the Middle East. President Trump’s direct involvement is expected to push European member states toward meeting higher defense spending targets while redefining the alliance’s collective security priorities under Washington’s updated foreign policy framework.
