Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has condemned the visible degradation of humanitarian volunteers detained by Israeli forces, demanding an immediate diplomatic apology and the prompt release of all Italian nationals.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni released a strongly-worded statement via her official social media channels, expressing deep indignation over public footage documenting the restrictive custody of Global Sumud Flotilla activists. The diplomatic crisis erupted after Israel’s far-right National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, published a video online showing captured international aid volunteers bound, zip-tied, and forced onto their knees at Ashdod Port after their vessels were intercepted in international waters. “The footage shared by Israeli Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir is completely unacceptable,” Premier Meloni stated, underscoring the severity of the geopolitical incident. “It is entirely inadmissible that these demonstrators, including numerous Italian citizens, are subjected to a targeted treatment that openly violates fundamental human dignity.”
MINISTRY SUMMONS ENVOY TO DEMAND COMPREHENSIVE EXPLANATIONS
The Italian leader confirmed that the administrative machinery in Rome moved immediately to implement institutional mechanisms to safeguard the well-being of its citizens abroad. Meloni detailed that the government has mobilized all necessary diplomatic and consular channels to secure the swift, unconditional release of the detained Italian nationals. Furthermore, pointing to the total disregard shown toward the explicit requests of the Italian administration, Meloni declared that Rome is formally demanding a complete apology from Tel Aviv regarding the operational conduct of its security apparatus.
As a direct consequence of the escalating friction between the two capitals, Meloni announced that the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued an urgent order summoning the Israeli Ambassador to Rome. The envoy will be required to present formal, immediate clarifications and a thorough official accounting of the circumstances surrounding the physical abuse and public broadcast of the detained humanitarian personnel.
