Ukraine initiates diplomatic outreach to the US as questions remain over Russia’s short-term ceasefire scope and long-term peace prospects.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that he has instructed his representatives to engage with the team of US President Donald Trump in order to clarify the details of Russia’s proposed short-term ceasefire.

In a statement shared via his social media account, Zelenskyy said he had directed officials to contact the US administration to better understand the scope of the proposal, emphasizing that Ukraine is committed to peace and is actively pursuing diplomatic efforts aimed at bringing the war to a definitive end.

QUESTIONS OVER RUSSIA’S PROPOSAL

Zelenskyy also raised concerns regarding the nature of the ceasefire offer, questioning whether it is limited to temporary security arrangements, such as a brief pause for a military parade in Moscow, or something more substantial. He reiterated that Ukraine’s position favors a lasting ceasefire, underpinned by credible security guarantees and a sustainable peace framework. According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine remains open to participating in any format that is honorable and effective in achieving these objectives.

PUTIN-TRUMP CALL AND CEASEFIRE SIGNAL

Meanwhile, Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov stated that during a recent phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, Putin indicated readiness to declare a ceasefire marking May 9 Victory Day. Ushakov added that Trump expressed support for the initiative, noting that the victory over Nazism in World War II is a shared historical achievement.
